There has been a recent outbreak of media reports claiming weight cycling to be safe. This claim is based on one study published in the journal Metabolism titled History of weight cycling does not impede future weight loss or metabolic improvements in postmenopausal women.
The study has since been used by a number of pop health experts to support the idea that if a person hasn’t successfully maintained weight loss in the past, they should ‘try, try again.’
At BodyMatters we feel the public have a right to know the truth behind such claims and to read about how the science has been distorted to support the multi-billion dollar weight loss industry. For that reason, we encourage you to read this excellent piece published on HuffPo by Dr Michelle May, titled Suprising Endorsement of Yo-Yo Dieting, which debunks the science behind the erroneous claims about weight cycling being safe.
