Hiro is a provisional psychologist at BodyMatters who facilitates our RO DBT group therapies. She is currently undertaking a Master of Clinical Psychology degree, and has completed Master of Science (Psychology) and Master of Social Science (Counselling). Prior to commencing her current studies, Hiro worked as a counsellor at a private practice, a psychiatric clinic, several international schools, as well as an EAP (Employee Assistance Program) affiliate counsellor in Singapore and Malaysia. Being bi-lingual (English/Japanese) has enabled her to work with a diverse range of people experiencing major life challenges in areas such as eating disorders, trauma, addiction, marriage & family, mood disorders and school-related problems.
Hiro strongly believes that a healthy therapeutic relationship is the key to a successful recovery from psychological challenges. She focuses on providing a safe environment for clients to reflect on their issues and explore ways to move forward with a more fulfilling life. She practices several different evidence-based therapy approaches according to client needs – Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Radically Open Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (RO-DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) and Gottman Couple Therapy. Her foundation is a Person-Centred approach.
Her professional interests lie in improving the lives of those who suffer from eating disorders as well as those who silently suffer from an unhealthy relationship between eating and body image. She is also passionate about improving the mental health of migrants and refugee families.
