About the Workshop and Learning Objectives:

Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is the common eating disorder comprising 47 percent of eating disorder presentations in Australia yet despite this, current transdiagnostic evidence-based protocols lack specificity to the unique nature of BED.

While current evidence-based treatment approaches for BED use similar techniques to Bulimia Nervosa (BN), modifications of transdiagnostic approaches are needed primarily due to people with BED having lower levels of dietary restraint, more chaotic eating including binge eating on a background of under and overeating, disrupted appetite regulation mechanisms and a higher weight. Additionally, body image disturbance while commonly present, differs significantly in BED to those with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) or BN. This poses challenges for clinicians in clinical practice where no treatment manual exists specific to BED and a lack of training specific to BED is available.

This workshop aims to meet this need and acknowledge the importance of conceptualising BED as an independent diagnosis, and more than that of common conceptualisations in current treatment manuals of ‘a non-compensatory form of BN’. This workshop seeks to provide a thorough evidence-based understanding of BED including the assessment, diagnosis, epidemiology, and key theoretical models contributing to our understanding of BED and its treatment.

Carmel aims to lean on her clinical experience to offer a ‘clinician friendly’ evidence-based approach to treatment that acknowledges the limitations of the most utilised treatment, CBT-E in treatment of BED, integrating immerging evidence-based approaches within a CBT-E framework. This includes normalising eating for those with BED within the RAVESTM model, elements from Schema Therapy, and Appetite-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy while engaging the weight loss versus ‘health not weight loss’ debate.

Please note, while people of all body sizes can experience any eating disorder, the scope of this workshop is for those with BED and a higher weight.
