BodyMatters welcomes Rebecca to the team!

NICKNAME: Beck or Becks

QUALIFICATIONS: Masters of Clinical Psychology; Bachelor of Psychology (Honours)

ACHIEVEMENTS: Completing my degrees in Psychology were big achievements for me but I am also proud of the relationship that I have built with my nephews, and that I have always endeavoured to follow the path that I want rather than the path most often travelled.

WHY DID YOU PURSUE PSYCHOLOGY? I was always drawn to connecting with people on a deeper level than small talk. I knew that I wanted to make a contribution to the world that I lived in, and I thought that if I could do that through connecting with people, that would be perfect!

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO WORK AT BODYMATTERS? I have been working at the Butterfly Foundation for the past couple of years and have been drawn to supporting people experiencing eating disorders and their families. I was also inspired by BodyMatters’ holistic approach through providing treatment, raising awareness and working towards preventing eating disorders.

YOUR FAVOURITE QUOTE: “smooth seas do not make for a skilful sailor”

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS: Ideally, It would be wonderful to one day open my own private practice assisting people with eating disorders. My private practice would resemble a multidisciplinary team consisting of psychologists, general practitioners and dietitians.

FAVOURITE SPORTS OR ACTIVITIES: I like playing touch football and netball.

FAVOURITE HOBBIES OR INTERESTS: I am an avid reader and love the escape that reading provides at the end of a long day. I have also recently developed an interest in mindfulness meditation.

WHAT IS YOUR SECRET SKILL: After experiencing three flat tyres in a three month period, I am now quite proficient at replacing a tyre!

WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU: It would be safe to say that Irvin Yalom would be my psychotherapy role model, I think he has enough empathy to inspire a whole nation. I am often inspired by the small changes that my clients take, often under very difficult circumstances.

WHO WERE YOUR CHILDHOOD HEROES: My big sister was my most important role model growing up. She was a Psychologist and definitely guided me in the virtues of supporting others in the community.

3 THINGS YOU WOULD TAKE ON A DESERT ISLAND: I would take a satellite phone so that I can call for help, a Mary Poppins style bag filled with an unlimited amount of food supplies, and a compass because I have a terrible sense of direction.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE INDULGENCE: Sipping coffee with friends having a good gasbag!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MOVIE: As a child, I loved ‘Mrs Doubtfire’. As an adult, I found the movie, ‘As It Is In Heaven’ inspirational…and since then I have always wanted to join a choir!

FAVOURITE PLACES TO TRAVEL: I like to travel to new places as there is so much to discover but really enjoyed my adventures in the Middle East.

IF YOU DIDN’T PURSUE PSYCHOLOGY, WHAT OTHER PROFESSION WOULD YOU PURSUE: I would have loved to be a teacher or be an advocate for environmental change.
