Embracing Inclusivity: Steps We’ve Taken at BodyMatters to Create a Safe Haven for Every Body

BodyMatters Australasia provides counselling and treatment for eating and dieting disorders, body image issues and problematic exercise. Our team of experienced therapists deliver treatment that is industry leading and best practice. If you are suffering from disordered eating, want to improve your relationship with your food and/ or exercise, or are concerned about a loved one exhibiting any of these concerns, we can help you. We offer a range of customised services including counselling, support groups, and events. At BodyMatters, our commitment to inclusivity is not just a mantra; it’s a guiding principle that permeates every aspect of our practice. We believe that everybody deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, and we’ve taken deliberate steps to ensure that our space is safe and welcoming to individuals of all shapes, sizes, abilities, and identities. Here’s a closer look at some of the measures we’ve implemented to create a safe haven for all.

Accessible Facilities: From the moment you enter our doors, you’ll notice that accessibility is a top priority. Whenever possible our offices are on the ground floor and do not have steps. We have accessible parking options nearby (please ask us for information if you are a client/prospective client). Our offices are established in locations that are close to public transportation.

Flexible Seating Options: The chairs in our therapy rooms generally do not have armrests and are cushioned to improve the comfort for all clients and family members, of all shapes and sizes. Whatever your body needs, we’re here to ensure that you feel comfortable and supported during your time with us.

Inclusive Decor and Imagery: When you step into our practice, you’ll find that our decor and imagery reflect the diversity of the human experience. We’ve made a conscious effort to avoid stereotypes and focus on the body through our choice of artwork and decor, which is culturally neutral. We do not have fashion magazines or anything that promotes weight stigma. Our goal is to create a space where every individual feels seen and valued.

Inclusive Language: Words matter, which is why we’re committed to using inclusive language in all of our interactions. Whether you’re discussing your treatment plan with a therapist or scheduling an appointment with our receptionist, you can expect to be addressed with respect and sensitivity to your identity and experiences.

Welcome Here: At BodyMatters we are proud supporters of the Welcome Here project, an initiative to communicate that LGBTIQ diversity is welcomed and celebrated within our practice. We ask for and acknowledge pronouns in our intake process and our practitioners are encouraged to share their pronouns with clients.

Privacy and Confidentiality: Your privacy and confidentiality are of the utmost importance to us. We’ve designed our practice to prioritise discretion, with private consultation rooms where you can feel comfortable discussing your concerns in a safe and supportive environment. Our signage is also discrete.

Feedback Mechanisms: We value feedback from our clients and actively seek out suggestions for improving the inclusivity of our practice. Whether you have a suggestion for a new accessibility feature or feedback on our services, we’re always eager to hear from you. Your input helps us continually improve and evolve as a practice. Please let us know if there is anything we have missed or can do better at.

At BodyMatters, inclusivity isn’t just a buzzword—it’s the foundation of everything we do. We’re dedicated to creating a space where every body feels welcome, respected, and empowered to prioritise their health and well-being. If you’re seeking support on your journey towards wellness, we invite you to experience the difference that inclusivity can make at BodyMatters.
